Eddie’s commitment to supporting those experiencing homelessness began 25 years ago during his time as a Councillor on Walsall Council. As a father of two, he took a strong interest in the welfare of the borough’s Looked After Children, and fully embraced his role as a Corporate Parent. With 25% of the adult homelessness population having care experience, he was passionate about safeguarding young people leaving the care system in Walsall from this challenging outcome.
Prior to becoming an MP, Eddie spent three years working with YMCA Birmingham, a small charity providing accommodation and support to approximately 300 young people who would otherwise face homelessness. This hands-on experience deepened his understanding of the complexities of housing insecurity and reinforced his commitment to alleviating it.
As an MP, Eddie continued this work on a national level. In January 2021, he was appointed Minister for Rough Sleeping and Housing, allowing him to drive policy changes aimed at tackling homelessness. During this time, he forged a strong bond with St Mungo’s, joining their support team for a night on the streets to gain firsthand insight into the challenges faced by those sleeping rough.
